Framed But Forgotten: Part 1 – Behind the Velvet Rope

The Red Carpet Isn’t for Everyone—Here’s Why That Matters.

"Discover the hidden barriers photographers face on the red carpet. Behind the glamour lies an invisible velvet rope—and it’s time to talk about it."

Framed But Forgotten: Part 1 – Behind the Velvet Rope

When most people see dazzling red carpet photos, they picture fame, fashion, and flashes of success. But behind those glittering images lies an invisible line — a velvet rope not just for celebrities, but for the photographers too.

The reality is, access to major events is not equal. Credentialing often favors large agencies, big media outlets, and established networks, making it nearly impossible for independent photographers, freelancers, and underrepresented creatives to get a fair shot. Many talented professionals are shut out — not because of lack of skill, but because of politics, favoritism, and outdated industry norms.

For photographers who don't "know the right people," the velvet rope becomes a wall. It limits diverse storytelling, stifles fresh perspectives, and keeps the gatekeepers in control.

In this series, we’ll pull back the curtain on how red carpet access works, who really controls it, and why it desperately needs to change. Because who gets to stand behind the camera shapes what stories get told — and whose moments are celebrated or erased.

Stay tuned for Part 2: Pay to Play.
